Hey Marauders,

Welcome to the very first entry of The Logbook, our brand new Marauders club newsletter! Every ship needs a record of its travels and we’d love to be able to look back on our memories together and share new ones too. In this quarterly newsletter, we’ll keep you up to date with new initiatives, club announcements, achievements to celebrate and more.

Enjoy!

Marauders earns Parliamentary mention as a community success story

Our club was put forward to the Legislative Assembly on 24 March as a community success story by Jo Haylen MP - member for Summer Hill.

Haylen celebrated Marauders and Marrickville locals Gaia and Daniels’ representation at the World Championships in Dubai as exemplary of how local sporting clubs like our own foster aspirations and can provide extraordinary opportunities for young people. Read the full transcript here.

Daniel joins fellow Marauder Gaia on the World Cadet & Junior stage

At the beginning of April, Marauders Gaia and Daniel took off to Dubai, UAE, to represent Australia at the 2022 Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships. Gaia is no stranger to the international stage while it was the first of Dan’s many representations at the highest level. Dan even fenced his Cadet World Championship event on his birthday!

Gaia finished ranked 49th in Cadet Women’s Sabre and ranked 42nd in Junior Women’s Sabre. Dan ranked 87th in Cadet Men’s Sabre and 136th in the Junior Men’s Sabre.

Marauders take Bronze at NSW Open Club Team Championships

This year, Marrickville Marauders was able to field 2 strong teams for the first time at the NSW Open Club Team Championships - A team (Garry, Daniel, Gaia, Kai) and B team (Toby, Rafi, Jaska). With plenty of excitement built up from our selection Challenge competition, our teams faced off against 7 other teams.

The hype led to amazing performances. The A team lit up their poule with a 45-40 thriller against UTS, featuring a 16 point comeback from Dan amongst the heroics that earnt them 2nd seed. They faced UTS again in the semifinal, earning bronze medals after a heartbreaking loss at 43-45. The B team took on giants in their poule, gritting their teeth to clutch an intense victory against Apollo Fencing Club’s B team at 45-43. Unfortunately, they did not advance from poules.

Suit Up - Help keep our Marauders safely dressed

Marrickville Marauders is a not-for-profit local fencing club and we work hard to keep fencing as affordable as possible for our community. A huge part of our operating costs are covered by grants and crowd-funded support from our wonderful Marauders community (that’s you! ).

Every year, we run a fundraiser through the Australian Sports Foundation and we ask our supporters to give generously. This year’s fundraiser - Suit Up - is dedicated to the signature protective equipment that keeps our Marauders safe day in, day out. Our club is in real need of new white clothing, electric jackets and masks - Some of our gear is almost a decade old! Can you help us keep suiting up?
